I wonder why Sega didn't apply this kind of trick for the FMV Sega CD games, so they probably could've had a better picture quality

Is it just me, or do the way that cartridge-based games, especially the way that Sonic & Knuckles works with the console and cartridges, seem more complicated than later disc-based games?

It seems like concurrent instructions work because on the circuit diagram the logical elements are wired independently and ALU codes don't have overlapping bits. If the ALU codes were consequential or the registers were shared between the operations, the execution of several operations would just mess each other (I didn't work with Saturn, that's just from an experiece from with small weird controllers). Awesome video!

I'm a little confused with the multiplexing of the sprites horizontally: If you have to use some sprites for the mountains in the background, even if it's only a few repeated horizontally, does that then reduce the max amount of actual player and enemy characters you could then show on the same scanline because you'd go over the sprites per scanline limit and they'd start to flicker? I'm thinking more of Shadow of the Beast here than your game to be honest, as that shows a full-screen-wide set of mountains plus the player and other enemies fully overlapping them, whereas you've been careful to make sure the player is never on the same horizontal lines as the background mountain/cog/fire sprites. Or, does this technique basically overcome the sprites per scanline limit and allow for both a full screen width of mountains [or whatever] plus the normal 8 16-pixels-wide sprites per scanline?

Man, this is art al it’s highest level. Played this in 98’ in Argentina, great memories, it was the end of 16 era and some of us were still playing sega games (clone consoles displaying 60hz with no regional restrictions) including toy story wich was my brother’s birthday gift in 96. Even if I lived the entire console wars in Italy from 91 to 95, when we moved back to Argentina the sega genesis was still rocking, thanks to some of this masterpieces you’ve been working on.

Did you code Atari ST version of Leander as well! If this amount of code trickery through special Amiga chips was required to run Leander, than ST's Leander, which runs preety good for ST terms, is a work of miracle. Anyway, Leander was one of my favourite games on Amiga, and although I play lot of Amiga games on emulation, I don't play Leander because it is to hard without joystick with "push down auto-fire" that I played on back in the day. See, when auto-fire is on, Leander can move and jump but since his sword is hiting constantly, no anoying off screen enemies can hit me cheaply! Since it was push-fire button and hold to auto-fire, as soon as you release it, auto fire stops. Without it, playing Leander on standard joypad these days, for me, is unplayable!

Using the Amiga Copper to clone sprites hardly beats the SNES, you are still limited to 8 sprites per scanline and each with a limited colour pallete, the SNES does not play by this rule. I used to use this effect on the Amiga to code parallax starfields ect, but such cloned sprites were limited in their degrees of movement not being able to take the scanline space of their cloned brothers.

In a fit of rage quitting, during a game of Ghouls N Ghosts, on the Genesis, I pulled out the cart WITHOUT switching it off. When I inserted it, and hit RESET, I was presented with the Japanese version, with awesome kanji GnG logo. Was this causing the cart to read my USA system as a JPN model? I would continue doing this for many other games - sometimes getting really wild results, such as the main character in Mystic Defender "changing to a woman", or so I thought.. (I was young, and naive about Japanese Gi dressings). The Revenge of Shinobi became "The Super Shinobi", and even had a much better ending sequence. In the past 35 years, I've never heard anyone talk about this "trick". Surely others must have done this, or even known about it. On a related note, I also did this with my Neo-Geo AES the following year (1990), even though I was kind of worried I might break a $200 cart, or the expensive console, but I had to know! So, after many attempts, of nothing, I realized it only worked when the cart wasn't fully removed. You had to pull it out at an angle, but leave about have of the pins connected. This would trigger, not a region change, but a SOUND TEST! Weird, I know... It would play, what seemed to be, every single recorded PCM sound, in the game, without any pauses. So, for BASEBALL STARS PRO, it would start with the drum samples. bass drum, snare, toms, hi-hat, splash, ride. Then only guitar chords. Then keyboards. Piano. sound effects, then recorded voice (which there was a LOT of), both Japanese, and USA versions. It was weird hearing the Japanese named teams, which you never see in the USA game. Anyway, I just wanted to share some of this somewhere, and this seemed like an appropriate place. :) -Matt

Leander is a truly fantastic game. I remember it well. Would using the Amiga's Blitter chip to draw software sprites help out here? Maybe limited cycle headroom meant frame times would be unacceptably long if it was used (hardware sprites being less of a cycle hit)?
